update - monday 5th
Today is the first day back after the dreadful snow week which i was unable to get into the school. Within the last week, i have made multiple daily blogs to keep updated and also showing my research for the digipak. I have drawn some designs on paper which i will upload alongside the blogs i have done within the last week which i have not been able to upload from home. Over the past week, I have not been unable to shoot anymore, nor have I been able to edit my footage, as they were on the school network. Although i have a copy of all the footage on my personal computer, i do not have the software to edit the footage properly at home, the Premiere Pro is only available to me via the school network. Due to this weather, i will and the deadline being moved to this Friday for the rough cut, i will spend this week editing my video, staying after school to do so, just to make sure this meets the deadline. after the rough cut, i will start on my digipak, bringing it out of just sketches and creating a final piece to start my work on.

Saturday the 20th's blog
Today I researched the ideas I want to use on my album art cover. Emily and I thought it would be a good idea if we used an Olympic torch in the front of the cover. This is significant because it would relate to the song we have done, We Are the Champions, as well as the video, which is based upon the loser becoming the champion. The reason I chose to research this is because to use such a significant symbol, I needed to know what it really meant and why I was using it. The Olympic flame or Olympic torch is a symbol of the Olympic games. Commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, its origins lie in ancient Greece, where a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. The fire was reintroduced at the 1928 summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and it has been part of the modern Olympic games ever since. According to legend, the torch's flame has been kept burning, ever since the first Olympics. One of the problems that lies here, is that if I intend to use this in any shape or form for my album art cover, I will need to create myself. Therefore, an idea that Mr. Earl had, was to use a match stick, or even more simple, a flame of some sort. It does not have to be an Olympic torch, but to use the fire itself would be effective. And reading the urban legend that the fire had been running since it was founded during the first Olympic game, I had an idea for the album art cover name; astound presents, The Flame That Holds Us Together.

Recording of the music
Yesterday, during lunch time, at Framwellgate Durham, Emily and I attended the music room A27, to re-record our music track. Alongside Philippa, James, Oliver and Jonathan we took about half an hour of practice, to just get the entire band ready to record at the best of their ability. Whilst the band practiced, I used the camera and the tripod to capture different angles of the band playing; I filmed Philippa singing at different times during the song, James playing the piano at different angles, Jonathan playing bass, an angle from the top of the neck of the bass guitar, as well as a P.O.V (Point Of View), Lastly I filmed Oliver playing drums at different intervals and different angles. I will get the recorded song from Mr. Lamb, who has the track saved on his computer, as it is his device which we've used to record the sound track of the band playing. I then went into my media lesson after lunch and uploaded the footage I captured onto the camera to my laptop to try and use the Adobe Premiere Elements 9 I have on my computer, but as it is a trial, it leaves a watermark on the footage, and to remove this, I will have to pay around £80 to buy the code to unlock the full version. This makes it harder for me to edit at home as I’d have to not only pay a lot of money, but also it takes up a lot of space on my personal computer, therefore I have decided to edit on the school network; this is because the school network has an entire separate Media Drive, which gives me a larger space to upload footage and edit videos within. The computers will be faster and much more reliable as there are many to use within the school, but I have only one laptop if I chose to use it for editing my footage.

Test Footage
Here, Emily and I, have shot our test footage and whilst Emily was off yesterday, i edited it a bit to make it look like a rough cut of our main video. Within the video, i have inserted the sound track that was recorded as a rough cut as well. This video has no real resembelance to our idea, but only to show what our video will blossom from.

Queen – We are the champions (analysis and timing schedule)
Lyrics | What’s Happening |
I've paid my dues - | This is basically the part within the storyline where the unaccomplished later-to-become hero/champion is shown ready to start the race, possibly tying her shoe lace (the use of her is because I think for the champion to be a heroin is much more effective than being a man, which most stories turn out to be). The video goes on with the heroin starting to run the race. |
We are the champions - my friends | Through this verse, the heroin is shown to be only moments from winning, when an arch enemy or competitor seems to take that away from her; this is when the other racer runs past her just before she reaches the finish line and wipes her from the race, setting an all new record and beating her. |
I've taken my bows | This verse shows the heroin sobbing and watching her losses as the nation celebrates her enemy’s win. She has gone in such a feeling of defeat that she is left with nothing, no championship, no fame, no fortune nor a legacy. This is ironic because the line says, “you’ve brought me fame and fortune” where as it hasn’t, she’s gained nothing but defeat. She is shown to start getting out of her mood and getting the will to train again. |
But it's been no bed of roses | In this scene, she is shown training, the first line estates “no bed of roses” which shows that the training was hard. And it shows her winning back her self esteem, her health and gaining the power to win what was took from her. |
We are the champions - my friends | This second from last chorus shows her getting ready for the race, and once the instruments kick in, she starts to run in the race. The old competitor doesn’t seem that bothered about her, because he’s already beaten her once; but as the race goes on, he see’s that she is a threat and tries to stop her from winning. |
We are the champions - my friends | In this last chorus, the heroin is shown overcoming the challenges which, took her down last time and beating her enemy. She is shown winning and crossing that line with pride and joy. She is shown celebrating her victory and how her enemy whom won last time, gives over the medal to her, with honour and shown being, the champion, of the world. |

Runaway Love - Analysed
In this blog i am going to upload the pictures (screenshots) from the video which i discussed in my previous blog; Runaway Love - Ludacris featuring Mary J. Blige. The scenes which i have chosen are specially meaningful and useful due to their link to my idea for my video. Firstly this scene shows a girls sitting alone by her self, the video at the start shows quite a few different girls like this, about 10 or 15 different girls, which then re-appear at the end of the video with Mary J. Blige when she does her solo.
In this scene, the featured actor is recognised, Mary J. Blige, she is shown as well as the starting credits for the video like the ones i will have to create for my video, it includes song name, the artists, the album and the producer or company.
In this scene, the first story has begun and it shows the two actors, one main and one not so important within the story. but it also shows Ludacris sitting in the back whilst he sings. I have had this idea, to put the band in the background of my videos, so that it gives it the effect of a music video whilst having a story to it, much similar to this video which also became famous for it.
In this scene, the second story has begun and it is showing how she is a Runaway Love. Again, Ludacris is in the back of the scene, dark, mysterious and focused out of the shot, not so important, but yet, it he is actually still effective in the background. in the next shot it shows the girl from the second story to be running past Mary J. Blige, this happened to the first girl also, this is effective that both actors have had moments in the video with both singers; it shows that everything is connected and nothing is random, that this isn't some movie or video and that's just the music that's accidentally playing in the background, this is a music video with singers who sing in it, but it also has a short movie in it as well, to show moral of the story.
In this shot, Ludacris is yet again sitting in the back, singing, and the camera changes focus from him to her, which i thought would be quite effective to use in my video, even though I need to learn how to do it first and to practice it. this girl is from the last story in this video.

Ludacris - Runaway Love ft. Mary J. Blige
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISvMS6s41vY&ob=av3n
I have linked you to this video because it is similar to our idea. Where within the video, there are different lives shown as a story and my idea is to show how the become glorious, victorious and champions of their own lives. I could use famous movie scenes such as Million Dollar Baby or Rocky 4 as the boxing scene. As I was writing about my idea, I remembered how I got my idea from this very famous video. The difference between this video and our idea would be that our video would have a happy ending, it shows how both stories would end with the actors getting to be the champions, where as on this video, it shows the victims just standing there upset and all Mary J. Blige does is that she says she will run away with them, so not exactly problem solving, not that she says she will adopt them or give them money to make their lives better, but just that she knows how they feel.

Update!
During the summer holidays, I have thought about different genres I could use within my music package. Although I had originally chosen Rock and Alternative, it was rather hard to be able to find an act, which I will be interested in making a video for, as well as get permission to do it. Most bands and their music do not interest me. I have been looking at famous bands such as Kings of Leon for Rock Alternative as well as bands such as Guns ‘N’ Roses or ACDC for rock only genres. I will need to find unsigned acts or try to contact the signed acts to try and use their products in my music video. During the summer I have also drew some scrap storyboards, which could connect with the rock genre, such as guitar players or drummers, or even the use of cars in the video. Recently Emily and I, have chosen to move onto British rock bands rather than the American rock bands that we have been researching on; this is because we have decided a British rock band would be more attractive towards a British audience. So far we have thought of using the band Queen and their top hits We Will Rock You or We Are the Champions.

Research, Aerosmith - Extension Task
The original music video for the first hit single “Dream On” by the American rock band Aerosmith is made up of a live concert at different angles and shots, which contrasts and makes each line of the song give a different feeling, for example, at the beginning, the video shows the orchestra playing, whilst a few seconds in, shows Steven Tyler’s face for a second, this shows how important he is, this is shown because the orchestra is shown as a whole lot where as Steven is shown on his own, making him the important member right from the beginning.
Furthermore, as time passes within the video, within the time period of 0:22 and 0:40, an object is shown to be lowered to the stage, this become clearer that is a piano and a man is playing it, at 0:43, that man is shown to be Steven Tyler and he is one again the centre of attention because he is the lead singer. The music video goes on to be nothing other than a live show, which is what most music videos are like within that era; Guns N’ Roses have done the same with the original Paradise City music video or even the song “Rock N’ Roll All Night” by the famous rock band Kiss, they are shown performing their song in a concert, but only difference is that the crowd level has been lowered and song volume has been maximised to make it look more like a dedicated music video rather than a simple concert, captured by a hand camera. The genre expected from this particular band was not as well illustrated as it probably should have been; this is due to the orchestra shown throughout the whole clip, Aerosmith are known for their hard rock genre, large outside concerts, and the only sound coming would be from the guitars, Steven Tyler leading, Joe Perry backing and the crowd screaming, but to see something like this, an orchestra, Steven Tyler on the piano and all happening inside a building is definitely a turn of events. But this quickly changes, near to mid-half of the video, as you hear Steven Tyler screaming passionately about this song, drums being hit like it is a jungle and the guitarists ripping a hole in the space and time continuum, just when the audience starts to wonder why this is the music video to one of the greatest rock songs ever made and to the song that lifted off the careers of the most famous band in the world, they realise that it doesn’t matter where this is happening, the only thing that matters is that it is happening, Steven Tyler is singing and people are enjoying themselves. The narrative of the clip is very linear; it goes from beginning to the ending, no interruptions, which is something you wouldn’t expect from a music video which is a live concert anyway, unlike one of the music Videos from Kiss, which shows different clips from different live concerts and a variation of images used within the video. Below is a screenshot of the clip and the link to the video is:
Research, Aerosmith - I Don't Want to Miss a Thing
"I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" is a Power Ballad by American rock bandAerosmith. It appeared on the soundtrack to the film Armageddon. The song was Aerosmith's most successful single in their career, and became a huge hit for the band internationally, reaching #1 in many countries around the world, including Australia, Germany, Ireland, Austria, Norway, Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. It was a shift from the hard rock music Aerosmith was ordinarily known for, and being more of a pop-rock song.
This is not only close to what they achieved in 1986 with their top hit song Walk this way (Run D.M.C. cover), they also managed to link with a very famous movie, which took their sales up so much that it kept them at number 1 in the USA, for about 4 weeks straight, this was an achievement as it sent them in the top 100 songs list, and after 28 years of group formation, this was their first song to do so. This song was their first crossover to the pop side, thus being a power ballad and not simple rock, which the group was based upon. Below is the album art cover which the song was released with, this is significant to the song because it links to the movie which this song has been made for and the music video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vo_0UXRY_rY , was very significant to the song and movie also because it included clips of the movie within the music video and it shows what Aerosmith have become through time, from a genre of american hard rock, to power ballads for a movie.
Research, Aerosmith - Walk This Way
"Walk This Way" is a song by American rock group, Aerosmith. It was written by Steven Tyler (whom is the leader of Aerosmith) and Joe Perry (whom is the lead guitarist of the band). It was originally released as the second single from their 1975 album ‘Toys In the Attic’. In addition to being one of the songs that helped break Aerosmith into the mainstream in the 1970s, it also helped resurrect their career of Aerosmith, bring them back into the charts and helped create the sub genre of ‘Rock/Rap’ when it was covered by rappers Run D.M.C. in 1986 on their album ‘Raising Hell'.
This song changed the way Aerosmith was seen by the masses, it had a change of audience, now that of the most famous rapper groups of the decade had collided with the most famous rock band of the century, they were both bound to share listeners. This clash was the first of it’s kind, but certainly not the last; for example, the most recent one being the song ‘Rockstar 101’ by Rihanna, one of the most sensational pop stars of the decade, whom collided her talents with the lead ex-guitarist of the band Guns N’ Roses, who happens to be the greatest guitar player alongside Jimi Hendrix and Joe Perry; when these two crossed paths, it was no surprise to the general audience as this has been done before, all starting from walk this way by Aerosmith and covered by Run D.M.C. Below is the album art cover which the first version of Walk this way was released in, not the newer rap version. The link to the newer version with Run D.M.C. is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIbHPs_M55Q . This music video illustrates the different genres clashing together. First you have the hippies with the long clothes and guitars, then you have the rappers with the clean tight symmetrical clothing, and DJ set. This was the first video of it's kind, to get such different acts, together and make them perform, which is why this has become one of the most significant videos of all time.
Research, Aerosmith - Dream On
Aerosmith is the first debut album by American rock band Aerosmith, released in 1973. It featured the famous song “Dream On” which got them their break; Written by lead singer Steven Tyler, this song not only became their first major hit, but also a legacy which is still reminded to my generation through rock music video channels every once in a while. The song was later re-released in 1976 as a single and went straight into the charts, alongside their 2nd and 3rd album Get Your Wings and Toys in The Attic. This song is a significant symbol to the band because of its genre and time it was written; Dream On had the original rock feel to it, the loud drums, the clear vocals, the screams and the guitar solos.
And being at beginning of the 70’s, this was the best time for it to shine through and make a hit for itself, and making Aerosmith close to the greatest rock band ever. All of Aerosmith’s songs had a slight tone of sadness to them, yet the lyrics and the music could make masses cry with joy at their concerts. This was the band’s first concept of music, , but as time went on, so did their type of music, but they never lost their original touch. Bellow is the album art cover of the album this song was first released. The link for this music video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6Qd9VR1gD8
A2 Update 1
It has now been almost a month since we have came back from our study leave to continue Media Studies at an A2 level. We have started to think about what we are doing for next year’s project. I have chosen to do a music video, an album art cover and a Digi-pak for the CD as well as a Poster for the music video of my choice. I have started my research on the particular genre that i want, Rock, and decided to look on the internet for amateur artists whom have done covers of famous songs. I have joined up with Jamie-lee Carr and Emily Smith in hope to make a group which will help us all do the best we can in next year's media project. I have been trying to post a blog on this website for about two weeks, but every time i have had issues with the internet or technical problems, thus not being able to talk about what i have been doing, but now i am able to fully talk about my works in depth. In the next few blogs, i will be sharing the research which i have done on my chosen artist.
